Handouts for Your Clients

Below are links to handouts for some of the commonly diagnosed ophthalmic diseases in dogs and cats. The handouts are intended to serve as resources for you to provide to your clients when these diseases are diagnosed in your hospital. If you have specific questions about the management of these diseases or would like to refer a patient with one of these diseases to The Eye Vets, please contact us at (615) 640-6335 or info@theeyevets.com.

Commonly Used Ophthalmic Medications

There are numerous ophthalmic medications to treat the various disease processes and injuries that we see in our patients. And it can be overwhelming! Below is a table of medications to consider prescribing or stocking in your hospital if treating ophthalmic disease or injury. Please contact us at (615) 640-6335 or info@theeyevets.com with any questions about a specific medication and its appropriate uses.

Session Synopsis

Eyelid and adnexal disorders are among the most common ophthalmic conditions encountered in general practice, and many can be successfully managed without referral when appropriate case selection and surgical techniques are employed. This lecture will provide a practical, case-based approach to diagnosing and treating common eyelid and third eyelid abnormalities as well as periocular masses in dogs and cats. Participants will learn how to determine when an eyelid or third eyelid should be "flipped" through corrective reconstructive procedures such as cherry eye or entropion repair, and when it should be "clipped" through surgical excision of eyelid and adnexal masses. Surgical planning, instrumentation, tissue handling, reconstruction principles, and postoperative management will be emphasized, along with recognition of cases that warrant referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist. Attendees will leave with practical techniques and increased confidence in managing common eyelid surgical conditions in everyday practice.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify common eyelid, third eyelid, and adnexal disorders in dogs and cats and develop appropriate diagnostic and treatment plans for each condition.

  2. Select and perform appropriate surgical techniques for common eyelid and third eyelid procedures, including entropion correction, cherry eye repair, and excision of eyelid and periocular masses.

  3. Recognize surgical limitations and referral indications by identifying cases that require advanced reconstructive procedures or specialty ophthalmic care.
